5 out of 5 stars Good, basic speakers   July 8, 2009

These speakers will never make my computer sound like my expensive stereo with Bose surround sound, but for the money they work great. I especially like that they do not require a separate power source but can run off the USB port on my notebook. I didn't expect that they also need to be connected through the headset jack. This cable sticks out on the front of my computer and gets in my way. Not a huge problem and one that desktop users won't have, but I thought the USB would be the only attachment I needed.

For under $20, amazing sound. I read the many reviews here before buying, and a few people complained of low volume, not enough adjustability, static and/or distortion. I just hooked mine up and am blown away by how good these sound. Listening to chamber music at good volume, the strings and piano come through with nice clear treble and mid-range, and with more bass than I would have expected from speakers the size of soda cans. I don't have any of the problems that some reviewers mentioned. Even at full volume, which is considerable, there is almost no distortion. No, they may not be "audiophile" quality, but if you're an audiophile, why are you buying $20 speakers? For the rest of us non-audiophiles who just want decent sound, you can't beat these with a stick. I'm going to buy a few more for Christmas giving.

I just received these speakers yesterday and have been having a blast trying them out! Here's some of the benefits of this product:

1) The sound quality is awesome.

Over the years, I have owned a variety of computer speakers and by far, this is the best pair that I have ever had. The sound quality is rich and clear -- and not fuzzy, like most of the competing products out there. It truly makes playing music (or even computer games) a richer experience.

2) Small and very portable.

They come in a box that is designed so that you can easily repackage them up and take them with you on trips! If you are at a hotel and want to share a family movie with everyone, just plug in your speakers and you now have an entertainment set that everyone can now "hear" and enjoy. ;-) Also, the setup instructions are very easy and are built right into the box itself, so you don't have to worry about loosing them.

3) Product uses one USB port (to power the speakers) and also an audio jack to receive the sound. This makes it easy for those who hate having to plug something extra into the wall. ;-)

4) Works with both PC and Mac.

In summary, if you are looking for some low cost speakers that simply work great, (and happen to be very travel friendly), this is definitely the product you are looking for! I am very pleased with mine.

5 out of 5 stars USB for power is fantastic - 4.5 stars really.   June 24, 2009

These are actually great little speakers. About the size of soda can, they look pretty stylish and are rather well constructed given the price point. Very easy to set up, you don't need instructions (there aren't any, anyway - the booklet just has the usual info about being careful with electricity in about five languages). Plug it into your USB port for electricity and the male jack into your audio source. Click it on and that's it. The sound is better than average for this price point and has reasonable clarity, fullness and power - the design probably helps here by giving a nicely sized echo chamber behind the speaker. Don't expect them to compete to higher price speakers or a stereo system, but they'll surely be better than your laptop speakers. I wouldn't travel with these, as I think there are flatter designs that would be better for that. But they'll look nice on your desk if you don't have a stereo nearby.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome at this price and quality   June 27, 2009

Over the years, I have owned many a desktop - PC and Mac - and various speakers to go with them. Some were part of a monitor, others self-contained. This is the first one that I have used that gets power only from the USB jack. Like most people I have a number of USB hubs connected to my computer and just plugged it into an open jack. Of course, the headset plug I had to use an extension (which I already was using for my desktop set-up - I use my laptop at the office and hook right up when I get there) so I was good to go.

Now, I usually read the instruction book before I do anything, but not this time. So, of course, this was the time I got stuck. Not really.... it just took me a few minutes to realize the on and off control was at the back of the speaker. Once I turned it on and played with the volume switch was I amazed. I mean, really, for this selling price, I was impressed with the sound. I even cranked it up to maximum to see. Only then did I get distortion. I tried various songs, even a downloaded TV show. I must say I was totally impressed.

Of course, these don't compare to my more expensive speakers I have hooked up at the office, but they sure come pretty close for most needs.

I also just hooked them up to the laptop and again it was a simple operation. And the sound was obviously no different.

I don't know if I would travel with these. I travel a lot and these would take up too much space. That being said, though, if I were going by car and was on vacation for a while I might consider it.

All in all, a great speaker for a really great price by a top name company.
