5 out of 5 stars AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEE   May 25, 2010
Susan (ZEBULON, NC USA)
I am not computer/tech wiz, but I know how to hook things up and correct some problems. So my review will not be much on the technical side. I am also not one that is overly concerned about the quality of speakers, if they work and provide good sound then in my book they are ok!!
I was pleassantly surprised when this set arrived. I was expecting a little box with two little speakers. Not so!! The speakers are good size and put out the volume really well. The adjustments of volume, treble and bass are easy to operate and function well. The sub woofer is what I would call medium large, and it does the trick just fine!! I like that I can place the speakers across the room thanks to the nice long cable/wire. What a pleaseure it was to get rid of the tiny little desk top speakers, not only did I get more room on the desk but I get great sound too!! I thought it was smart on the manufacture s part to put the instructions on the box top flaps!! I would recomend. For the price i would say you get your money's worth

5 out of 5 stars From Yackety Sax to the Black Eyed Peas......   May 26, 2010

I'm loving this speaker system!!! Granted the only speakers I'm familiar with for my PC were usually the little Dell rectangular things that come free with your PC, so any upgrade would be an improvement. Normally I would load up my Ipod or burn some CD's and then play them in my stereo, but with that said the Altec set up has gone a long way in me finally getting rid of my stereo and simply piping the music directly from the PC.

I've thrown everything at these speakers, from 80's Hair Metal, to 90's alternative, current pop, classical, classic rock and punk....and the Altec system has handled them all without any drop in quality. As a matter of fact the speakers fill up the whole house with a warm rich sound that is even better than the stereo I've been using.

To top it all off, the Altec system looks GREAT! Before I kind of tucked my old speakers away or tried to camouflage them in some way so they wouldn't be so noticeable....but with the Altec's design being so eye-catching, I want them front and center.

The Altec VS4621 speaker system takes listening to music on your PC to a whole new level. For the cost of a half decent desktop CD player, you can transform your PC into the ultimate home jukebox. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I like it but my neighbors may not   May 26, 2010
J. Offenbach (N VA)
When the huge box arrived, I thought I'd made a mistake by ordering the Altec Lansing VS4621 Octane 7, 2.1 Computer Speaker. Fortunately, the shipping box was much larger than the item, so my blood pressure was quickly reduced. The speakers do have a small footprint and the taller contemporary shape is quite attractive. The subwoofer size is compact enough and unobtrusive in it's solid black boxy shape. I now have it placed on the bare wood floor, so my downstairs neighbors are likely not too happy with me right now. I will be placing a small carpet beneath it this afternoon.

Installation was intuitive and quite simple -- the most time consuming aspect was removing all the plastic. I didn't even notice the visual directions for set up are imprinted on the inside top flaps of the box. Because there is no bottom covering on the speakers by design, I'm especially careful when moving the speakers from one position to another. You'll get a different sound depending upon what surface you place the speakers. In the past hour, I've listened to Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, M.I.A., my Dad's dictation of his life story, Charles Mingus Lama Karta, The Black Lips, David Sedaris and Luka Bloom. The least pleasing on these speakers was a classical piece by Schubert which demonstrated the "muddy" nature of this sort of speaker system. Now this is a wide variety of music and sounds and my impression is that this is a really nice system which for the most part I would recommend. There's also an AUX input on the front of the speaker with controls so it can be hooked up to another electronic device of choice. Being able to adjust the volume, treble and bass gives me simple control options but by using the iTunes Equalizer, I can adjust to my preference with each cut. Throughout the years, I've purchased and used various speakers for my stereo, iPod, computer and entertainment systems, and I'm very impressed with these! Can't now wait to watch a movie and hear how these speakers reproduce the sound!

5 out of 5 stars Not To Be Confused With A Stereo System -- A Non-Audiofile's Review   June 1, 2010
John P. Thiel (Astoria, Queens, New York City)
I'm giving this five stars purely as a computer speaker system. Just the fact that it has a bass woofer box makes it five stars, while the sound quality of the satellite treble speakers is 'very good'--for a computer speaker system.

My most appropriate basis of comparison is with the speakers on my Sharp Aquos television--which are excellent as television speakers go. These Altec Lansing speakers beat them only in the bass category, but overall the sound quality is not as good, so if you're using a high end HDTV as a computer monitor, and it includes good quality speakers, you might not consider this an upgrade except in the bass category.

Do not expect to get the same quality of sound out of this as a Bose or Cambridge Soundworks system of course. The system looks like it would provide that level of sound quality, but it doesn't. Whomever designed the look of the speakers and the packaging was a genius because just looking at it raises your level of expectation, but don't be disappointed when you hook up the product and feel like you only have better than average computer speakers with the added benefit of better than average bass.

Also note that none of the three speakers has a standard speaker-wire hook up, an RCA port, or an optical port like the one that might come out of your Playstation or HDTV. These speakers are desiged only to work with each other, as a set, not separately or with any other system. The only hook up is a standard mini headphone jack plug like you find in an iPod, Walkman, or other MP3 player.

This system also doesn't provide 'room filling' sound. For that, you need a real stereo that provides at least 40 watts per channel as opposed to this set which only provides about 7 watts per channel--because it's a COMPUTER speaker system, and a very good one at that. This set is good for having at your desk, to enjoy far better audio than your computer alone provides, not as a substitute for a $500+ stereo system.

Considering all of the above, used as intended, I consider this system to be an excellent value. Personally, I'm using it with my iPod Touch while I'm riding my bike trainer, which is a drastic improvement over headphones or one of those docking speaker systems made for the iPod which costs just as much. On occassion, I might also use it with my computer while I watch my favorite shows on Hulu or Netflix.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't know what I was missing   June 17, 2010
JSBM (San Diego, CA)
With a small-speaker iMac, I had suffered for years without good sound quality. I knew the sound was poor, but I really didn't know what I was missing.

Enter the Altec Lansing sound system. The three-piece set (including sub woofer) brings whatever audio program into life with clear treble and full bass sounds. When I wanted to hear all of the aspects of a song before, I had to blast the volume. Now, the volume is relatively low, but the sound is so much fuller.

The design is okay and the setup is adequate, but I whole-heartedly recommend the product. If you want to hear your music and not just listen to it, invest the $80 here.
